The original golf course (the remnants of which are now the University of Utah), was the site of the Western Open in 1947, which attracted golf great Ben Hogan. By the end of the decade, women and their guests had become an integral part of the club's activities. In the early 1940s, a few women members were accepted. Things slowed down at The Fort Douglas Club during the Depression-ridden 1930s. Reed Smoot of Utah promoted a bill through Congress allowing a $370,000 dam to be built in Red Butte Canyon. When water from Red Butte Creek proved to be inadequate for the growing of a golf course, U.S. The clubhouse featured attractive rock work, diverse and beautiful rooms, and an amazing view of the valley. Over the years, that clubhouse was expanded so often that it became a showplace. Gradually, the course took shape, culminating in a small clubhouse, built of lumber saved from the demolition of war buildings. In 1923, an 18-hole golf course was laid out, and the ground plowed and harrowed by horse-drawn equipment. The membership would include post officers and civilians.īy selling memberships at $100 each, the general collected a fund of $10,000. He agreed to provide labor, horses and equipment if the civilians would raise funds for seed, pipe, sprinklers and hose, so that a golf course could be built on the Fort Douglas grounds. Over time, he developed friendships with many of his neighbors and proposed a plan to improve the local military image. The patio may also be rented for private parties. ![]() We built all new practice facilities including a chipping green, large putting green, and a short game area featuring a green, bunker, and length up to 70 yard wedge shots.Ĭharwood has also added a large outdoor patio area near the driving range behind the grill area that can be used for tournaments, outings, and special events. We have music playing on our driving range and practice areas making for a super laid back atmosphere. We have usb ports in our carts for charging your devices, and we have loaner bluetooth speakers in the pro shop. We like to say Charwood is “Where Golf Is Fun!”… We encourage music as long as it stays in your group. Now in 2019, we’re on 3rd generation ownership! On any given day you come out, chances are Rock (2nd generation) and Daniel (3rd generation) will be out working on the course, just look for a yellow and black lab running around and you’ll know it’s us! It’s our promise to you we are working extremely hard to give you the best playing conditions possible and most importantly, the best value golf course in the Midlands!
